Meghalaya covers an area of 22,430 sq km. Mostly mountainous Meghalaya also has many rivers which are seasonal and rain fed. Some of the important rivers are Ganol, Khri, Mawpa, Bandra. Between 150 m to 1,961 m is the elevation of the plateau. Khasi Hills has the highest elevations Jaintia Hills region. Meghalaya in the Shillong Peak is the highest point.

- The cold season (December to February)
- The warm season or hot season (March to April)
For most of the year Garo Hills with lower elevations, experiences high temperatures whereas The Shillong area, with the highest elevations, generally has low temperatures with the maximum temperature rarely going beyond 28 ° C, whereas below-zero winter temperatures are common.
